Today, porphyry is widely used by architects as cladding and finishing material for paving, walls, building elements such as stairs, window ledges and frames in general and for roof covering. The use of porphyry stone is also common for the construction of solid cladding and traditional masonry work. Quarry scraps and fine ground pieces are mainly used to create road embankments and railway ballast, and for the production of inert material used in bituminous macadam and concrete.

Paving
Various types of paving exist, which may be classified by the geometric shapes of the elements with which they are laid, such as: pebbled pavement, sett pavement and slabbed pavement.

Pebbled paving
Pebbled pavements are usually made with pebbles, called "trovanti", found for the most part in rivers. They thatlack a well-defined geometry and vary in shape from the spherical to the irregular ellipsoid. They are most commonlyoblong in shape with dimensions that range from 9 to 12 cm along the major axis and 6 to 8 cm along the minor axis. In the case of porphyry, which is an especially resistant rock, the pebbles found in nature tend to be spherical and with a diameter that goes from 4 to 1015 cm, whereas those produced in the workshop can take on many differentshapes and sizes. Pebbled pavementsfeature a large array of geometric setting patterns.
