To overcome this problem and simplify the various phases of installation, as well as to more easily lay special patterns, Porfidi Internationalhas introduced its Cubico® product range. Cubico® is a 10x10 cm sett available in three different thicknesses, used for both external and internal floorings. Binderi (bricks) are porphyry elements essentially used for road paving. Their upper surface is natural cleft with split edges that are perpendicular or slightly out of square. They are produced by splitting rough slabs with hydraulic presses.

In addition to road and town square paving, they are also widely used as contour to pavements made of small cubetti, flagstone or other elements and for achieving particular patterns. A special type of binderi, called "a massello" (meaning rectangular block) is used to border pavements, form sidewalks and create seating steps. They differ from normal binderi inthat they are slightly higher: 15-20 cm instead of 5 -10 cm. Smolleri (narrow bricks) are small slabs parallelepiped in shape and of variable thickness and size. When laid they form a solid unit not less than 10 cm thick. The visible edge of the smolleri, as well as the other edges, is split, while the two side faces are natural cleft. They are most commonly used for paving steep roads (Fig. 22), laid on their side, perpendicular to the traffic surface; less often they are used for cladding masonry work,where they are laid flat. If subject toheavy loads, such as those due to vehicle traffic, they require cement or gravelbeds.
